Breckenridge CO Town Clean Up Day, May 22, 2010
The Breckenridge CO Town Clean Up Day was held Saturday, May 22, 2010 and there was a great turn out, despite the fact that the event occurred on the same morning as the Summit High School graduation ceremony. This annual event is hosted to help prepare the Town of Breckenridge for the summer season. Volunteers walk the streets and Riverwalk area of town, picking up trash and debris which has collected over the winter.
This year, the Breckenridge Town Clean Up Day was held at the Breckenridge Riverwalk Center in the heart of downtown. Volunteers gathered at 9am to receive their gloves, garbage bags and location assignments for the targeted areas for trash pickup. It was great to drive to our location and see volunteers working all along the streets of Breckenridge.
Between us, my wife and I collected 6 large bags of trash from the locations of Airport Road, the Riverwalk area adjacent to the Breckenridge Gondola and the Four O’clock ski run. Volunteers love to compare some of the more bizarre items they find each year and this year was no different. Some of the stranger roadside finds included:
- a cemented trowel tool
- small container of buttons
- dirty underwear
- a used condom
The Breckenridge Town Clean Up Day concluded back at the Riverwalk Center with a Volunteer Appreciation Zero Waste picnic. Harvest Catering and Lucha Colorado Cantina supplied the delicious food and the Breckenridge Brewery donated 2 kegs of beer like they do every year. We were treated to the great sounds of The Luv Brothers, a local Breckenridge band who kept many dancing all day. Planning a Town Clean Up Day in May at 10,000 feet above sea level is always a risky proposition. But we were blessed with a warm, sunny day in Breckenridge and the event was a major success.
