Uniquely Breckenridge: Sugar

Chef Katy Pierson, owner and designer, of Sugar has been living in and loving the mountains since 2001.  A Minnesota native, Katy moved to Breckenridge from La Jolla California where she worked as a camp counselor.  Katy spent the next several years working at Clint’s, a local bakery/coffee shop in Breckenridge, which helped further ignite her passion for baking and lead her to find a culinary program to attend in California.

Katy, referring to herself as always being a crafty person, states her culinary passion sparked at a young age. “Throughout my childhood, my mom could always be counted on to have a rotation of seasonal-based Martha Stewart magazines on the coffee table to help inspire her evening and holiday meals.”   

In 2006, Katy attended the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone in beautiful Napa Valley.  Upon graduation Katy moved back to Breckenridge and started baking her art at 9,600 ft. (an art all on its own).  She first began working out of Clint’s bakery on Main Street in Breckenridge, baking pastries after the shop closed for the evening.  She later moved to a commissary kitchen in Silverthorne for 7 years before obtaining her own kitchen on Airport Road in Breckenridge last summer.

Since starting her business Katy has been featured Martha Stewart Weddings, Style Me Pretty, People, Ruffled, Brides and many more!  In 2014 she was named one of the Top Pastry Pros in Martha Stewart's Weddings magazine.  Katy works with her clients to create the perfect centerpiece for their wedding reception. Whether you prefer a traditional, whimsical, or modern creation, Katy can create the cake of your dreams.


A now 15 year local, Katy has made Breckenridge her home finding her husband here and raising two corgis in this beautiful mountain environment.  When Katy is not in the kitchen, she enjoys her dogs, cross-country skiing, hiking and fly-fishing with her husband, a respected and well-known fly fishing guide in Breckenridge.
