USA Pro Cycling Challenge in Breckenridge - The Course is Announced
Organizers of the premier American bike race have announced the routes for each of the stages of this year’s event and the two days of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge in Breckenridge promise to be exciting ones!
On Tuesday, August 20th racers will begin the day in Aspen, then battle Independence Pass, snake their way along the Collegiate Peaks through Buena Vista then turn east on US 285 passing over Trout Pass, and into Fairplay. There they’ll head north on Highway 9 passing through the historic town of Alma, then over another daunting pass, Hoosier Pass at 11,541 before descending into Breckenridge. But the USA Pro Cycling Challenge in Breckenridge doesn’t end there! Once in town they’ll face one more challenge: the 15% grade of Moonstone Road, just a few blocks off of Main Street. The racers will be rewarded with a flowing, fast downhill on Boreas Pass as crowds cheer the finish of Stage Two of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge in Breckenridge.
Adding Moonstone and Boreas Pass roads onto the tail of the race provides ample opportunities to see the athletes up close and personal as they fight against the course, fatigue and each other to finish the day in first place. Just as thrilling for spectators is the rare chance to awake the next morning and again be a part of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge in Breckenridge. As one of the few locations to be selected as a finish and start location, Stage Three will begin the next morning (Wednesday, August 21st) on Main Street as racers prepare for another long day of riding on their way to a finish in Steamboat Springs.
One of the most memorable parts of the race’s history was during the 2011 inaugural Challenge as racers battled each other over Swan Mountain Road to the delight of the crowd. The Swan Mountain portion was reminiscent of scenes from the famous hill climbs of the Tour de France where spectators run along the riders shouting encouragement while dressed in zany outfits. Get the zany outfits back out, because the USA Pro Cycling Challenge in Breckenridge again makes its way over Swan Mountain, this time in reverse as the race winds through Summit County before heading north.
Combining the excitement of the previous two years’ events, the 2013 USA Pro Cycling Challenge in Breckenridge will without a doubt be one of the highlights of 2013 in this quaint mountain town.
